Sutda

◊ Korean gambling game ◊

Sutda is a very simple game of chance and very gambling oriented, popular amongst Korean gamblers. For further reference on gambling card games, please visit our sister site CARDSHARK Online.

• Number of players

2 to 10 (4 or 5 is best)

• Cards used

Korean hwa-tu cards. 20 cards total. 2 cards from each month except November and December. All cards are "junk" (see rules of Go-Stop for explanation) except for the "curtain" and the "moon".

• Game objective

To win money by catching the highest-ranking hand.

• The play

At the beginning of each round every player pays an ante into the pot. The dealer deals 2 cards face down to each player in turn, 1 card at a time. The player with the highest hand (as scored using the rules below) wins.

The winner takes the pot. In the case of a tie the pot is split. Depending on the cards held by the winner, the losers may have to pay multiples of the ante to the winner.

The hands are ranked as follows: highest winning combination is the "curtain" and the "moon", followed by pairs (the higher the month the higher the hand), followed by a few special combinations of cards. If a player has none of the above he adds the value (the numerical value of the month) of each of his cards and takes the last digit (so a total of 15 is worth 5, and a total of 20 is worth 0).

Here's a list of the pairs and their bonus to ante (listed highest to lowest):

"curtain" and "moon" pays x10 bonus
October pays x5 bonus
September pays x3 bonus
August pays x3 bonus
July pays x3 bonus
June pays x3 bonus
May pays x3 bonus
April pays x3 bonus
March pays x3 bonus
February pays x3 bonus
January pays x3 bonus
